Risk factor identification is a critical step in the process of supporting juvenile offenders. The risk factors for juveniles can differ from adults and can vary based on the stage of child development of the juvenile. It is important to identify the risk factors for your specific client. 

You are working as a juvenile court probation officer. You have been assigned Jennifer Scott. You can read about her background. You have been assigned a 800 word report that identifies all the major interpersonal, familial, and environmental risk factors for your client. You will use this report to create a comprehensive case plan for her in Week 5.

What ethical and legal implications do you think the department faces? How do you think the department should respond going forward?

In Module 4, we considered the second in our three-part series on research design. Specifically, the focus was on the quasi-experimental design, in which some comparison is made without the benefit of random assignment or full experimental control. Also, as with the prior week, this module's assigned readings provided a bit of historical context for the debate between scholars who assert that experimental evidence is the "gold standard," and those that maintain that experimental evidence is overrated.

In this week's discussion, pick any topic of your choice involving crime within criminology/criminal justice, and explain (a) why it is difficult or impossible to study using a classical experiment, and (b) why that topic can and should still be studied using non-experimental alternative designs. What are the most important considerations? How would you approach this task if you were in charge of the study?

The three theories covered this week (i.e., just deserts, deterrence, and incapacitation) have played a major role in driving U.S. punishment policy for the last several decades. First, select one of these theories and  briefly discuss the pros and cons of correctional policies aligned with this theory. Second, using empirical evidence from the assigned readings (or other appropriate sources), argue whether correctional policies aligned with this theory have been successful when implemented in practice. Finally, argue whether the selected theory should be the dominant correctional theory or not. Support your argument.
