To demonstrate our worth, knowledge, and ability to make wise decision, it is often related to accountability. Accountability is often referred to as “the hallmark of professionalism.” According to the American Nurses Association (ANA), “accountability means to be answerable to oneself and others for one’s own actions. In order to be accountable, nurses act under a code of ethical conduct that is grounded in the moral principles of fidelity, loyalty, veracity, beneficence, and respect for the dignity, worth, and self-determination of patients. Systems and technologies that assist in clinical practice are an adjunct to—not a replacement for—the nurse’s knowledge and skill. Therefore, nurses are accountable for their practice even in instances of system or technology failure. Nurses are accountable for judgments made and actions taken in the course of nursing practice, irrespective of health care organizations’ policies or providers’ directives.
In my opinion, we can demonstrate accountability in the following ways: deliver and encourage the best possible care for patients, act as an advocate on the part of your patients, aware of and follow all appropriate standards of practice, guidelines, and laws, intervene in an appropriate manner when patient safety is endangered including reporting patient abuse to the appropriate authority, develop and maintain clinical competence (e.g., through participation in continuing education programs) and do not perform any tasks for which you lack competence in, and take appropriate responsibility for errors. The term “usability” was introduced in healthcare with the emergence of electronic health records (EHR). The adoption of EHR is the change that was introduced for the convenience of patients and medical workers, ensuring the precision of the information, the diagnosis, and the protection of personal information (Meehan et al., 2016). In this context, usability is the convenience of the use of the EHR system; it has to be user-friendly, cumbersome, convenient, and effective in exploitation. Usability can be defined as the extent to which the product can be flawlessly used by the target group of users, who aim to reach concrete goals inefficiency, satisfaction, and effectiveness in the context of the application of the product (Meehan et al., 2016). In the healthcare sector, usability is the convenience and efficiency of the use of electronic systems by healthcare specialists.
For years, EHR systems’ usability has been a critical issue, revealing numerous flows and inconveniencies in use by the professionals, which were not taken into consideration by the developers of the software, who did not make the product of the desired usability standards. In the course of the last five years, the systems have advanced their usability, taking reviews of the medical staff into consideration (Meehan et al., 2016). Better usability increases the rates of adoption of EHR systems, decreases the burnout of nurses and other medical staff, improves patient safety, and reduces the possibility of making an error. Its rates are estimated based on a scale of 100 points, reported by the users of the system.
