Criminology Discussion Post 3: Linking your topic to real-life situations

This discussion board is about refining your research proposal by linking your topic to real-life situations and applying what you’ve learned in your course.

My topic is: ( Topic you selected for Criminology Discussion Post ).

Here’s what to do:

  1. Reflect on real-life situations:
    • Think about experiences, cases, or observations you know of that show barriers faced within your topic of choice.
    • These could include discrimination, lack of job training, employer bias, lack of transportation, or legal restrictions.
  2. Apply course concepts:
    • Review what you’ve learned in the course such as theories, research methods, systemic inequality concepts, or policy analysis and think about how these ideas can address those barriers.
    • For example, consider how a particular theory could explain employer bias or how a strategy could improve reentry programs.
  3. Write your main post:
    • Summarize your analysis in a clear, reflective post. Include:
      • A description of how your topic connects to real-life challenges
      • How course concepts can strengthen your research proposal
      • Why your research could matter in the real world

Goal:
The purpose of this discussion is to help you deepen your proposal while gaining new perspectives from your classmates that can strengthen your research approach.

STEP 5: Respond in two separate posts to two classmates (in at least 75 words). In your response, you can:

  • Write about how you might approach the same topic, and how it is similar or different from your classmate’s.
  • Suggest an alternative way to narrow their topic.
  • Introduce a different angle they might explore.
  • Pose a thought-provoking question to push their research further.
