Kelly McGonigal on Stress: Chasing meaning is better for your health than trying to avoid discomfort

Kelly McGonigal on Stress:

Chasing meaning is better for your health than trying to avoid discomfort. The best way to make decisions is to go after what it is that creates meaning in your life and then trust yourself to hand the stress that follows.

This video illustrates one example of managing stress with a mind-body approach. We can't eliminate the stressors in our life or act like stress doesn't exist. As such, we should make the best of the situation by learning to grow. Although there are some good points with this approach, this is not a technique that will work for everyone. For example, we all have behavioral habits that correlate with Type A or B personality characteristics. How you handle and approach this type of stress management technique will be determined by how you develop the kinds of behavioral habits that correlate with Type B personality characteristics.

Comment and post your response on the video. Please respond to one of your classmates. This Hypothesis Discussion is worth 15 Points.

Hypothesis allows you to take notes, view and reply to other notes from your peers. The Hypothesis Assignment in this course will have either a pdf or video embedded. For this assignment, you will annotate (comment or add notes) on an embedded video.

Please answer the following questions:

  1. What was the overall message of the Video?
  2. Do you agree with this mind-body stress management approach? Explain.
  3. Will this mind-body approach work or not work for you? Explain and give examples as to why this approach would work or not work for you.

For one complete day and evening, record any events that cause the mind and emotions to affect your body and any events that cause your body to produce emotions and thoughts

For one complete day and evening, record any events that cause the mind and emotions to affect your body and any events that cause your body to produce emotions and thoughts.

An example would be experiencing a near vehicle crash on the freeway. How would your body respond to the vehicle that veered directly in front of you, causing you to take immediate action? What emotions and thoughts would you have? This would be a mind/body interaction.

Post your diary for the next day and ponder the idea that we are each truly one “bodymind,” not a separated group of systems.

This forum will be used as a discussion on the mind/body interaction. I want you to post the following:

    • Any events that caused the mind and emotions to affect your body.
    • Describe what happened.
    • Any events that caused your body to produce emotions and thoughts.
    • Describe what happened.

        How would you define psychoneuroimmunology?

        1. How would you define psychoneuroimmunology?
        2. Do the mind, the immune system, and the nervous system constantly communicate with each other? Is there any scientific proof? Explain.
        3. What are the major components of psychoneuroimmunology?
        4. What have we learned about the emotion-immunity connection in heart disease, cancer, and other health conditions?
        5. What are the major criticisms of the mind-body approach?
        6. What is integrative medicine, and what benefits might it have for patients?
