For this assessment, define the patient, family, or population health problem that will be the focus of your capstone project. Assess the problem from a leadership, collaboration, communication, change management, and policy perspective. Before you complete the instructions detailed in the courseroom, first select one of the following to be the problem you focus on for your capstone project:

• Patient Health Problems o Diabetes: A chronic condition where the body either doesn't produce enough

insulin (Type 1) or can't effectively use the insulin it produces (Type 2). Diabetes leads to elevated blood sugar levels. Management includes medication, dietary changes, and monitoring blood sugar levels.

o Drug and Alcohol Abuse: The misuse of substances, including illegal drugs, prescription medications, and alcohol. Drug and alcohol abuse can lead to addiction, physical harm, or mental health disorders. Treatment often involves detoxification, counseling, and long-term recovery strategies.

• Family Health Problems o Substance Abuse: The misuse of drugs, whether prescription, over-the-counter,

or illegal. This can lead to addiction, health issues, and disruptions in family life, including financial strain and trust issues.

o Mental Health Disorders: A range of conditions affecting an individual's mood, thinking, and behavior, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or personality disorders. These disorders can impact family roles, communication, and overall well-being.

• Population Health Problems o Smoking Cessation: Efforts and interventions aimed at helping individuals quit

smoking. Given the significant health risks associated with tobacco use, smoking cessation is a major public health priority.

o Obesity: A global epidemic characterized by excessive body fat. Obesity is linked to numerous health complications and is influenced by dietary habits, physical activity, genetics, and socio-economic factors.

These health problems are significant challenges for healthcare providers and public health experts. Addressing these issues requires a comprehensive approach that includes preventive measures, early detection, and effective treatment strategies. Education and awareness campaigns, community engagement, and policy changes are also essential to improving population health outcomes. After you have selected one of the problems from the list above, return to the detailed instructions in the courseroom to complete your assessment.

Purpose of assessment:

The primary objective of assessment is to support and encourage your learning.

Assessment results give the assessor an indication of how well you learnt in class and or areas you

Competency requirements:

To be judged competent in this unit, you must satisfactorily complete all assessment tasks to be

Competent (C) in the unit. Students with unsatisfactory completion of any of the assignment

tasks will be deemed Not Yet Competent (NYC).

Assessors will ensure that the evidence collected meets the requirements of the Rules of

Evidence (authentic, current, sufficient and valid) prior to entering results into the competency

record sheet.

Students unsuccessful at achieving “Satisfactory” for any assessment at the first attempt will be

given two opportunities for reassessment. If the student is still deemed Not Yet Competent (NYC)

after two reassessments in a unit of competency, student will be required to repeat the unit as

per the scheduled delivery of the course. For further details, refer to Australian School Of

Commerce Assessment Policy and procedures.

Assessment tasks:

To achieve competency in this unit, you must satisfactorily complete all the following assessment

tasks within the date and time specified by your trainer/assessor. This will demonstrate that you

have all the required skills and knowledge for this unit.

Simulated Environment:

The simulated environment will provide students with all the required resources (such as the

equipment and participants, etc.) to complete the assessment task. The simulated environment

is very much like a learning environment where a student is able to practice, use and operate

appropriate industrial equipment, techniques, and practices under realistic workplace

conditions.

The simulated environment consists of the following:

• You are required to mention your name and student Id in either header or footer of the

assessment document to be submitted.

Submission of assessment:

You must ensure that the completed assessment tasks are submitted along with the assessment

cover sheet:

• ALL tasks must be completed in legible English. It is preferred that the tasks submitted for

assessments are typed.

• You must submit all assessments on or before the due date specified by the assessor as per

the training plan.

• Extensions for individual assessment tasks may be negotiated in specific circumstances with

your assessor/trainer. However, you need to provide genuine evidence documents when

seeking an extension to due date (e.g. extensions due to illness will require a medical

certificate). To arrange an extension, you must speak to your assessor prior to the due date.

Extensions must be confirmed by the trainer in writing.

• You are permitted to use dictionaries and to seek support (as required) unless it puts in

jeopardy the integrity of the assessment, your assessor will let you know if this is the case.

• Unless the assessment task specifically allows pair work or group activities such as

brainstorming, you must submit your own original work and must not copy the work of other

students. Plagiarism is unacceptable.

• You must complete the student’s declaration.

After Submission of assessment:

• Once you have completed and submitted assessment to trainer/assessor, your

trainer/assessor will mark the submitted assessment and will arrange a time with you for the

feedback discussion and to advise if there are any further steps for them to take.

• You will be provided with:

o clear and constructive feedback based on the assessment decision

o information on ways of overcoming any identified gaps in competency revealed by

the assessment

o the opportunity to discuss the assessment process and outcome

o information on reassessment and the appeals process

o an opportunity for reassessment, if appropriate

• This unit is not graded, and the student must complete and submit all requirements for the

assessment task for this unit of competency to be deemed competent.

Assessment outcomes: –

For unit of competency:

There are two outcomes for assessments: C = Competent and NYC = Not Yet Competent

(requires more training and experience).

You will be awarded C = Competent on completion of the unit when the assessor is satisfied that

you have completed all assessments and have provided the appropriate evidence required to

meet all criteria in line with the Rules of Evidence. If you fail to meet this requirement, you will

receive the result NYC = Not Yet Competent and will be eligible to be re-assessed in

accordance with the Australian School Of Commerce Assessment Policy and Procedures.

For assessment task:

There are two assessment outcomes for tasks. S = Satisfactory and NS = Not Satisfactory.

On the individual assessment cover sheet for assessment tasks you will be marked Satisfactory, if

you have completed the task successfully, submitted all evidence and satisfied the assessment

criteria and Not Satisfactory, if you have not completed the task, the evidence is not sufficient or

does not meet the requirements of the assessment criteria.

Recording an assessment result:

Once the assessments have been completed, the assessor will record the assessment results on

the student assessment record sheets and all results will be approved by the Training Manager.

Assessors will check that you have completed the signed student declaration prior to filling out

the assessment sheet.

Retaining assessment records:

Australian School Of Commerce will securely retain all completed student assessment items for

each student for a period of six months from the date on which the judgement of competence

for the student was made. Australian School Of Commerce

will also retain sufficient data to be able to reissue AQF certification documentation for a period

of 30 years.

The assessor will ensure that the student records are securely retained and stored in accordance

with the Australian School Of Commerce record management policy accessible by the Student

Administration Officer.

Re-assessment:

If you are unsuccessful at achieving competency at the first attempt, you will be given two

further opportunities for re-assessment at a mutually agreed time and date. For further details,

refer to the Australian School Of Commerce Assessment Policy and Procedures. As this is a

competency-based program, the assessment continues throughout the program until you either

achieve Competency in the assessment tasks or a further training need is identified and

addressed.

Student access to records:

You have the right to access current and accurate records of your participation and results at

any time. You can request a copy of your records (results or attendance progress) by

contacting the student administration or assessor.

Support:

You may seek clarification about the assessment information and the instructions and tasks at

any time from the assessor.

Reasonable adjustments and special learning needs:

Australian School Of Commerce works to ensure that students with recognized disadvantages

can access and participate in education and training on the same basis as other students.

Disadvantages may be based, for example, upon age, cultural background, physical disability,

limited or non-current industry experience, language, numeracy or digital literacy issues.

Where pre-training interviews and LLN assessments reveal that a student may require special

support or where, after enrolment, it is made apparent that the student requires special support,

reasonable adjustments will be made to the learning environment, training delivery, learning

adjustment is reasonable if it can accommodate the student’s particular needs, while also

taking into account factors such as the student’s views, the potential effect of the adjustment

on the student and others and the costs and benefits of making the adjustment.

Any adjustments made must:

• be discussed, agreed and documented in the assessment record

• benefit the student

• maintain the integrity of the competency standards and course requirements as stipulated

in the training package

• be reasonable to expect in a workplace.

Reasonable adjustment may consist of:

• providing additional time for students to complete learning and assessment tasks

• presenting questions orally for students with literacy issues

• asking questions in a relevant practical context

• using large print material

• extending the course duration

• Presenting work instructions in diagrammatic or pictorial form instead of words and

sentences.

Complaints and appeals:

If you are dissatisfied with an assessment outcome, you may appeal the assessment decision. In

the first instance, you are encouraged to appeal informally by contacting the assessor and

discussing the matter with them. If you are dissatisfied with the outcome of such discussion, you

may appeal further to training manager. If you are still dissatisfied, you may appeal formally and

in writing to have the result reviewed. For more information, refer to the Assessment Policy and

Assessor intervention:

Assessors will check if you are ready for the assessment and defer the assessment if you are not.

Feedback will be given to you at the completion of the assessment. During role play, the

assessor will stop the assessment immediately.

Plagiarism, cheating and assessment dishonesty:

Planning the assessment

Access all resources mentioned in required resources, either printed copies or access via the

internet.

This is a Project-based assessment where you are required to read the scenario provided and

complete the activities at the end of this task. This assessment also includes role play activities.

▪ This assessment will be conducted in ASOC’S Campus with access to the resources listed

above.

▪ Student must read and respond to all criteria of this assessment task and submit answers in

electronic copy.

▪ No marks or grades are allocated for this assessment task. The outcome of the task will be

Planning the assessment

▪ Access all resources mentioned in required resources, either printed copies or access via

the internet.

▪ Time required for assessment: 16 hours (this will be completed over multiple sessions but

student must submit assessment on or before the due date provided by the

trainer/Assessor). Role play is allocated 10 minutes per student per role play activity.

▪ Complete and submit the assessment on the date given by the Assessor.

▪ Assessor will set a time to provide feedback.

Resubmissions and reattempts:

▪ Where a student’s answers are deemed not satisfactory after the first attempt, a

resubmission attempt will be allowed. Students will be given total 3 attempts including 1

original plus 2 reassessments.

▪ Student may speak to their Trainer/Assessor if student have any difficulty in completing this

task and require reasonable adjustments (e.g. can be given as an oral assessment).

This project requires you to research, contribute towards and support a

strategic workforce plan.

You can do this for a real situation at your workplace, for a start-up business

you are working on yourself or you can use the Simulation Pack provided.

Vocational education and training is all about gaining and developing

practical skills that are industry relevant and that can help you to succeed

in your chosen career. For this reason, basing your project on real

relationships with classmates or work colleagues will mean that you are

applying your knowledge and skills in a relevant, practical and meaningful

way!

If you use your own business or workplace, make sure it has policies and

procedures that address human resource management (as a minimum

Health and Safety Policies and procedures) already developed. You also

require sufficient information to monitor, review and evaluate your Strategic

Workforce Plan – read through Section 3 for further information.

2. Write a Workforce Briefing Report.

This briefing report will be presented at a meeting to senior management

(their approval is needed to move forward with developing a Strategic

Workforce Plan).

If you are using the case study business, the report will be sent to the CEO,

Marketing Manager, Finance Manager, Administration Manager and

Academic Manager.

Develop a Workforce Briefing report to present to senior management (e.g.

CEO and other senior managers).

sources of information as you conduct your research.

Your Workforce Briefing Report should address the following:

• an overview of your business’s human resource requirements for the

next three years.

• identification and analysis of emerging trends and practices that may

impact on human resources management in your business (including

any new technologies relevant to your business and its impact on job

roles and design).

• strategies to address the emerging trends.

• a review of any recent and potential changes to industrial and legal

requirements that will impact on your business’s workforce.

• a review of:

o the number and type of staff that will be needed to meet your

business’s strategic direction

o skill requirements for new and existing staff

o the range of options (at least three) for sourcing staff (include

a discussion of the costs and benefits of each approach).

• the philosophies and values you believe underpin or should

underpin your business’s human resources management.

• recommended strategic workforce directions (at least three priority

areas and objectives and targets).

• identification of the technology and systems required to support the

recommended human resource programs and practices.

The briefing report should be approximately two pages long.

If your business has its own reporting template, use it (make sure you include

all the requirements listed above). Otherwise, use the template provided in

the Simulation Pack and apply it to your business.

The text of the plan should be in grammatically correct English, written in an

appropriate (polite, business-like) style. Make sure you match the style of

your writing to suit the audience.

Make sure you have answered all questions in Section 1.

You are required to attach certain documents as part of your evidence –

work for, ensure that your senior management team provides sufficient input

3. Conduct a meeting with relevant senior managers to discuss your briefing report.

You are required to conduct the meeting to discuss your Workforce Briefing

Report to inform the development of the Strategic Workforce Plan.

Ensure that you have senior management input and support from at least

two senior managers (of varying levels such as CEO and General

Manager).

If you are using the case study, assume you are meeting with the CEO,

Marketing Manager, Finance Manager, Administration Manager and

Academic Manager.

Prepare for the meeting by reading through the remainder of this step and

by making notes to guide your discussion.

At the meeting, you are required to:

• provide an introduction to the meeting and state the purpose of the

meeting.

• explain the key points from the briefing paper and provide the

opportunity for questions.

• seek input on all aspects of the briefing paper for the development of

the Strategic Workforce Plan including:

o asking Managers about their preferences for human resources

requirements.

o discussing and agreeing on the philosophies, values and polices that

you have identified for your business’s workforce.

o discussing strategic objectives and targets for human resource

services.

o confirming the required technology and systems to support

human resource programs and practices.

Throughout the meeting, make notes. You will need to use the ideas you

write up to develop the Strategic Workforce Plan.

During the meeting, you will need to demonstrate effective communication

and negotiation skills including:

• Selecting appropriate gestures and conventions (e.g. handshake,

greeting etc.)

• Speaking clearly and concisely

• Using effective non-verbal communication skills to assist with

understanding

• Asking questions to identify required information

• Responding to questions

• Using active listening techniques to confirm understanding

• Persuading managers of your point of view (for at least one point).

The meeting should take 30 minutes. This will either be attended in person by

your assessor or they will attend online. If you are in the workplace, you may

like to video record the session for your assessor to watch later (attach proof

to Section 1 of your portfolio). Your assessor can provide you with more

details at this step. Make sure you follow the instructions above and meet

the timeframes allocated.

4. Develop a Strategic Workforce Plan.

Develop a Strategic Workforce Plan using your research and input from the

meeting.

If your business has its own Strategic Workforce Plan template, use it.

Otherwise, use the template provided in the Simulation Pack.

The text of the plan should be in grammatically correct English, written in an

appropriate (polite, business-like) style. Make sure you match the style of

your writing to suit the audience.

6. Obtain support for the Strategic Workforce Plan and risk Management Plan.

Draft an email to the Management Team to seek approval for your

Strategic Workforce Plan and Risk Management Plan.

Your email should introduce and summarise the contents of the attachment

and ask for final approval.

The text of the email should be in grammatically correct English, written in

an appropriate polite, business-like style.

Remember to attach your Strategic Workforce Plan and risk Management

Plan to the email.

Make sure you have answered all questions in Section 2.

You are required to attach certain documents as part of your evidence –

review the documents you need to attach as outlined in Section 2 of the

Project Portfolio.

Submit Section 2 to your assessor.

Assume that your Strategic Workforce Plan and Risk Management Plan has

been approved.

Start working on Section 3 of your project portfolio. Steps 7 to 12 form part of

7. Develop a survey to seek staff input.

In order to implement the Strategic Workforce Plan, you are required to

develop an organisational climate survey.

relation actions outlined in the Strategic Workforce Plan, the intention is to

also gain feedback on overall employee satisfaction to assist with future

workforce planning initiatives.

Design an online survey (e.g. Survey Monkey) that:

• includes at least 12 questions about general satisfaction with the

workplace.

• includes at least eight questions about satisfaction with new initiatives.

• allows employees to provide an answer based on a five-point scale.

Draft an email to all staff. Your email should introduce and outline the

purpose of the survey, give the link to the survey and give an appropriate

deadline for completing it.

The text of the email should be in grammatically correct English, written in

an appropriate (polite, business-like) style.

Assume that a period of time has passed and that Strategic Workforce Plan

has been implemented.

9. Develop a Work Life Balance Report and Action Plan.

Assume that one of actions identified from the employee survey is to

develop a business Work/Life Balance Strategy.

You are required to implement this action.

Conduct research and develop a short report to present to staff about

options for the range of potential work/life balance programs that could be

implemented and recommendations on which programs you think are most

appropriate for your business.

Use the Work Life Balance Report and Action Plan Template to guide your

work.

You report should be approximately one page long and written in clear and

concise English. Make sure you match the style of your writing to suit the

audience.

10. Update Health and Safety Policy and Procedures.

Assume that the Health and Safety Officer of your business has emailed you

to support your proposed actions for Work/Life Balance actions. They advise

that a further improvement would be to ensure that the actions are

formalised in the business’s Health and Safety Policy and Procedure. This

should be a policy statement about the organisation’s commitment to

Work/Life Balance.

Review the Health and Safety Policy and Procedures and update it as

recommended by the Health and Safety Officer. The update will be a short

statement about the organisation’s commitment.

Highlight any changes you make to the Health and Safety Policy.

11. Evaluate the performance of the Strategic Workforce Plan.

Assume that one of the initiatives implemented was “working from home

arrangements for some staff members”.

Develop a short evaluation report (to top management such as the CEO)

summarising the impact of the working from home arrangements and

performance against objectives from the Strategic Workforce plan.

The report should be in your own words (half a page to one page long).

You report should be written in clear and concise English. Make sure you

match the style of your writing to suit the audience.

12. Update your Strategic Workforce Plan.

Include additional actions in your Strategic Workforce Plan based on the

scenario information and assumptions made during this section.

Highlight the changes you’ve made and change the version number of

your plan.
