This week’s discussion is on secondary sources. Every academic source will cite other authors and you will at times find yourself wanting to cite that secondary source. In the powerpoint, I discuss this and give examples. This week what I want you to do is find a source that cites someone else. Your job is to locate the primary source, practice referencing, and explain why this is important.

INSTRUCTIONS
This week’s discussion is on secondary sources. Every academic source will cite other authors and you will at times find yourself wanting to cite that secondary source. In the powerpoint, I discuss this and give examples. McBurney also addressed this issue in the readings. This week what I want you to do is find a source that cites someone else. Your job is to locate the primary source, practice referencing, and explain why this is important.
So, for example. I did some research in the library on paraphrasing and found the following article:
Kettel, R. P., & DeFauw, D. L. (2018). Paraphrase without plagiarism: Use RRLC (read, reread, list, compose). Reading Teacher, 72(2), 245–255. https://doi-org.libproxy.troy.edu/10.1002/trtr.1697
I found the following information that cites a different author within the article. This is taken directly from the article above:
Shanahan (2017) supported summarization as an effective means to respond to text because summarization requires students to think about the author’s message and purpose, identify key details, determine how the author organized the text, and analyze the text as a reader and writer.
Now, I need to find the article written by Shanahan (2017), so I go to the articles reference section to locate the full citation.
Shanahan, T. (2017, July). What does writing in response to text really mean? Paper presented at the annual meeting of the International Literacy Association, Orlando, FL. Retrieved from http://shanahanonliteracy.com/publications/what-does-it-really-mean-to-write-about-text
I copy and paste the web address and I am able to locate the article that Kettel and DeFauw were paraphrasing.
Now what?
Your post should include the following:
First: the original source in proper APA format
Kettel, R. P., & DeFauw, D. L. (2018). Paraphrase without plagiarism: Use RRLC (read, reread, list, compose). Reading Teacher, 72(2), 245–255. https://doi-org.libproxy.troy.edu/10.1002/trtr.1697
Second: the information you want to use that is a secondary source
Shanahan (2017) supported summarization as an effective means to respond to text because summarization requires students to think about the author’s message and purpose, identify key details, determine how the author organized the text, and analyze the text as a reader and writer.
Third: The reference of the secondary source in proper APA format
Shanahan, T. (2017, July). What does writing in response to text really mean? Paper presented at the annual meeting of the International Literacy Association, Orlando, FL. http://shanahanonliteracy.com/publications/what-does-it-really-mean-to-write-about-text
Fourth: Whether you were able to locate the secondary source and how. Now pretend you were unable to locate it. How would you cite the quote in-text and in the reference section? Cite your direct quote and reference in APA format.
Yes, I was able to locate this source but if I wasn’t able to here is how I would cite it in-text and the reference section.
“Shanahan (2017; as cited in Kettel & DeFauw, 2018) supported summarization as an effective means to respond to text because summarization requires students to think about the author’s message and purpose, identify key details, determine how the author organized the text, and analyze the text as a reader and writer” (p.246).

Fifth: Tell me why it is important to do this.
This is important because… my powerpoint, page 258 in APA manual, or McBurney will help you answer this question. Make sure to cite any sources you use to answer this part.
