Overview

You will create a presentation that will illustrate a personal reflection and action plan focused on personal natural resource use, as discussed in your final project. The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate mastery of the course concepts and encourage students to incorporate course learning into an applicable future choice plan. The purpose of the presentation component is to effectively demonstrate your personal action plan.

This will be a personal reflection presentation on one or two natural resources that you would like to focus on to make personal changes, from the general categories of animals, plants, water, air, soil, minerals, food, and energy sources. This moves beyond recycling and packaging reduction to help you define a real and significant lifestyle change regarding natural resource use. The presentation is not intended to duplicate your final paper but to communicate visually the key information that you have identified through research of your topic and the action plan that you have developed.

In addition to providing background information on your proposed personal changes, your action plan requires you to include how you would execute your plan. This will help to ensure that scope and feasibility for your plan exist.

For example, if you were to get rid of all toxic cleaning supplies in your home, what steps would you need to take? What resources would you need? What costs would there be? How would you go about accomplishing these steps and goals?

Guidelines for Effective Presentations: Your final presentation can be submitted in PowerPoint, Google Presentation, or Prezi. If you do not have access to PowerPoint, you can visit https://www.openoffice.org/ to download the program named Impress. It allows you to create a presentation with a free, compatible program through OpenOffice. A free word processor is also available at this web address.

  • There are various template designs that you can find on the web for your presentation. Consider your presentation from the perspective of your audience prior to selecting a specific style. Avoid distractions. Be consistent with the style of text, bullets, and subpoints to support a powerful presentation that allows your content to be the focus.
  • Each slide should include your key point(s). Do not place large blocks of text on the visual.
  • Use clip art, AutoShapes, pictures, charts, tables, and diagrams to enhance but not overwhelm your content.
  • Be mindful of the intended audience.

Specifically the following critical elements must be addressed in your presentation:

  1. Introduce the topic that you have chosen for your final project, clearly showing the impact of natural resource use on the environment.
  2. Provide several descriptive slides that:
    1. Describe key points to provide context using information from Section 1: History and Contemporary Viewpoint from Milestone Two.
    2. Use key examples that you identified in Section 2: Local Real-World Applications from Milestone Two to illustrate opportunities and challenges for the change that you want to happen.
    3. Illustrate the importance and impact of your topic using information from Section 3: Global Significance, Impact, and Applications from the final project paper.
  3. Provide a thorough description of your action plan of specific steps that you need to take to make the change happen. This should be the major part of your presentation.
  4. Create Conclusions slide(s) that illustrate how your action plan demonstrates your personal responsibility for the environment.
  5. Add References slides acknowledging key resources that you used, using correct APA format for the citations.

What to Submit

Presentation II should be cohesive and illustrate the key components of the action plan using text and diagrams, photos, and illustrations. It must follow the following formatting guidelines. Use one of the following presentation formats: PowerPoint, Google Presentation, or Prezi. Use discipline-appropriate citations for all information including images. Presentation length requirements: 15 to 20 slides using 16- to 20-point font.

Historically, mankind cleaned with natural resources. Ancient civilizations cleaned with water, sand, and ashes. As societies matured, vinegar, lemon juice, and essential oils were discovered for cleaning. Saponin-based soaps from soapwort (Saponaria officinalis) were prevalent. Early soap was made from animal fats and wood ashes. These natural cleaning systems thrived for generations, adapting to local resources. Natural cleaning agents were engrained in domestic habits and passed down through generations, creating the basis of household cleanliness before synthetic chemicals.

Historical Awareness

American understanding of synthetic cleaning product concerns emerged in the mid-20th century. The 1962 release of Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring" raised worries about the environmental impact of synthetic chemicals, particularly those in household cleaning products (Naidu, 2021). Some ignored the worries, while others questioned the safety of home chemicals. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and 1976 Toxic Substances Control Act regulated chemicals, including cleaning products, in the 1970s. Consumer advocates demanded product labeling openness and safer alternatives. Eco-friendly cleaning products were first reluctant to adapt due to consumer habits and the apparent efficacy of synthetic cleaners.

Global Historical Awareness

Global understanding of synthetic cleaning product concerns followed a similar pattern to America, with regional differences. Germany and Sweden pioneered eco-friendly measures throughout Europe. The 1972 Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment raised worldwide environmental awareness, especially chemical contaminants. The 1987 Montreal Protocol, which phased out ozone-depleting compounds, indirectly affected cleaning product compositions globally (Jansen et al., 2024). International environmental movements and agreements slowed awareness in developing countries. Some countries promptly regulated dangerous substances, while others struggled to balance economic expansion and environmental concerns. The 1992 Rio Earth Summit globalized environmental issues, including household chemicals.

3.Green cleaning products are less effective than harsh chemicals, which many people dislike. Change this perception and prove green cleaning works may take time.

Final tips & takeaways

Facts

Green cleaning products are, in most cases, just as effective as traditional cleaners that use harsh chemicals. Of course, non-toxic and green cleaning products simply do not contain some of the fast-acting chemicals found in traditional cleaners.

Although green and non-toxic cleaning products are becoming mainstream, that does not discredit their practicality and effectiveness. At one point, many people thought that green cleaning was just a fad for the overly cautious. However, we have seen repeatedly that traditional cleaners do pose some serious health risks.
