Education week 5 Assignment

Exceptional Learning and Inclusion Final Assignment

[WLO: 3] [CLOs: 1, 2, 3, 4]

Throughout this course you have been on a journey to deepen your understanding of exceptional learning and inclusion. You have begun work towards this culminating assignment in Weeks 2 and 3 of the course. Now, it is time to complete two additional pieces to demonstrate your understanding of the key ideas and topics presented throughout the course and how they will help inform your everyday work with children and families of children with exceptionalities. These assignments should be useful in your future work, so consider your intended career path as you determine what to create.

To prepare,

  • Review Chapter 2: Teaching Children in Special Education.
  • Review the feedback you received from your instructor on your assignments in Week 2 and Week 3.
  • Choose the project you will create to demonstrate understanding of each Course Learning Outcome (CLO) from the options below. You are revising the artifacts you already created for CLOs 1 and 3 and creating new artifacts for CLOs 2 and 4, for a total of four. You may choose the same style (e.g., assignment, parent resource, etc.) for all, or you may mix and match, but you must submit four total artifacts.

Analyze the importance of considering a client’s culture when conducting assessments or selecting interventions in applied practice. Provide 1-2 examples of how culture can be incorporated within this context.

    Cultural Humility

Describe cultural humility and benefits of taking a culturally humble approach in practice while providing examples or explanations of what may happen if a humble approach is not used. Explain specific skills needed to adopt culturally humble approaches and specific ways we can develop and maintain those skills. Support with examples and research – cite your source. [One example of a source is listening to Dr. Patricia Wright on Cultural Humility for a discussion on cultural humility. The link can be found in the reference list at the end of this document.

    Responding with Cultural Humility

Provide three supporting examples of a culturally humble approach in action based on the following statement from an anti-ABA Autistic Adult within the context of two groups of people in frequent conflict: (1) behavior analyst researchers and practitioners and (2) anti-ABA autistics and advocates.

As an autistic adult, I am strongly against the use of ABA therapy. ABA therapy is based on the harmful idea that autism is a deficit that needs to be fixed. It can involve coercive and aversive techniques, such as punishment, isolation, and physical restraint. These techniques can be traumatic for children and can lead to long-term psychological harm.

I believe that ABA therapy is fundamentally unethical. It teaches autistic children that they are wrong for being who they are. It also teaches them to suppress their emotions and to conform to social norms. This can lead to a number of negative consequences, including anxiety, depression, and self-hatred.

I am grateful that I did not receive ABA therapy as a child. However, I know many autistic adults who have been harmed by ABA therapy. They have shared stories of being punished for stimming, being forced to make eye contact, and being isolated from their peers. They have also spoken about the long-lasting psychological effects of ABA therapy, such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

I believe that autistic children should be supported and accepted for who they are. They deserve to learn and grow in a safe and inclusive environment. ABA therapy does not provide this kind of environment. It is a harmful practice that should be abandoned.

I urge parents and caregivers of autistic children to consider alternative approaches to supporting their children. There are many ways to support autistic children without using ABA therapy. These approaches focus on accepting and supporting autistic children for who they are, and on helping them to thrive in their own unique way.

The culturally humble responses to criticisms about ABA examples provided should be based on the specific skills needed to practice with cultural humility and steps that professionals can take to develop and maintain those skills. Hint: Explaining why one thinks anti-ABA movements misunderstand ABA is not an example of how to respond with cultural humility. [See For Whose Benefit?: Evidence, Ethics, and Effectiveness of Autism Interventions (ASAN, n.d.) for a review of the main concerns expressed about ABA by Autistic self-advocates. Scenario #2: Social Justice

You live in a neighborhood with an active community organization. You and your neighbors are very concerned about inequity, as the city is spending money on improving road conditions in some areas, but not others. One of your neighbors asked you to join them in attending a Community Action Meeting to address these observations in the form of an informational campaign. By reading the Elm Glen city profile linked in the Supporting Materials section, you will learn about an example that highlights sustainability in action. In the template, you will describe some actionable steps the community group could take for each pillar of sustainability.

    Directions:

Based on the scenario based above, respond to each part below by completing the Project Template. Each scenario will require you to demonstrate your understanding of sustainable practices, the potential impacts and influences on decisions made in sustainability, and the actionable steps you could take to address sustainable issues for your chosen group. You will use the Scenario Profiles linked in the Supporting Materials section to support your work on the project. This document contains descriptions of the related group for each scenario, as well as a relevant case study that relates to the sustainability issue.

Specifically, you must address the following:

    Part One: Sustainable Practices

In this section, you will look at the interconnectedness of environmental issues and human behavior as it relates to your chosen scenario. To do this, you will look at both how the environmental systems in use impact the community as well as how the community use impacts the environmental systems in place. You will also look at the group’s overall bias in addressing sustainability in your community.

    1. Describe how environmental systems in use in your chosen scenario impact human behavior.
      1. Consider ecosystems, cultural systems, and organizational systems in your response.
    2. Describe the impact of the current resource use on the environment.
      1. What resources does the group in your scenario use?
      2. What is the impact on the environment?
    3. Describe how human ideology impacts behavior regarding environmental systems.
      1. What policies or vision impacts the environmental systems in use within your chosen group?
      2. Think about your chosen group; what behaviors do they practice regarding the environmental systems?
    4. Explain the role of cultural bias in your chosen group’s approach to global sustainability.
      1. What are some of the biases within the group that impact the use of the resources discussed in the scenario?

    Part Two: Profile

In this section, you will use a provided profile related to your chosen group to consider how organizations or groups mentioned in the profile have improved (or not improved) their sustainability practices.

    1. Describe the value of sustainability practices in human and environmental systems.
      1. What are the short-term benefits of implementing sustainable practices in your chosen group’s related profile?
      2. What are the long-term benefits of implementing these sustainable practices?
    2. Explain the relationship between sustainable systems and human equity in the context of the related profile.
      1. In what ways did your profile highlight the relationship between sustainable practices and human equity?
    3. Describe how conflict resolution is used in the profile to support sustainability.
      1. What examples of conflict resolution were evident in your profile?
      2. How were the conflicts resolved (or not) in your profile? How did resolving conflicts impact sustainable practices?
    4. Explain how cultural systems relate to sustainability within the profile.
      1. What cultural systems were predominant in your profile? What role did culture play in sustainability efforts in your profile?

    Part Three: Actionable Steps

In this section, you will focus on describing actionable steps related to sustainability for your chosen group. To do this, you will highlight the current state of your chosen group’s sustainability practice and then describe actionable steps for each pillar of sustainability.

    1. Explain why sustainability improvement is needed in your chosen group.
      1. What areas of sustainability are needed in your chosen group?
      2. What are the benefits for your chosen group if they improve sustainability practices?
    2. Describe how the perspectives of the various stakeholders of your chosen group provide a context to improve sustainability practices related to the concerns of the group.
      1. How do the perspectives within the group influence efforts made to improve sustainability practices?
    3. Explain how cultural diversity in your chosen group can be of value in addressing sustainability issues.
    4. Recommend actionable steps your chosen group could take for each pillar of sustainability.
      1. Reflect on what you know about your chosen group and sustainability. What are some actions that could be taken to improve sustainability?
      2. For each pillar of sustainability, what are some benefits of improving sustainability practices within your chosen group?

      Genotype and testcross; Drosophila

In your experiments with Drosophila, you found that the wildtype allele that codes for grey adult insects is sometimes mutated, with mutants having a black colour. Similarly, you find that your population has alleles that code for vestigial wings instead of the wildtype normal wings. (Both mutations are recessive.) You want to know whether the two genes for body colour and wings are linked. In your preliminary crosses you have established a large number of individuals that you require for testcrosses.

9a. Which two genotypes will you use for the testcross? (Hint: One of the two genotypes should be a heterozygous dihybrid.) Use the common wildtype notation (e.g., “ar+ tg”) rather than the allele notation (VvZZ). For simplification, disregard the gender. (2)

9b. Indicate the two phenotypes of your testcross. (1)

9c. Indicate the genotypes of the progeny (next generation) of the testcross by drawing a Punnett square. (3)

Assuming a total number of 4400 flies for the progeny generation, what are your expectations for the ratio of genotypes if

9d. the two genes are linked? (1)

9e. the two genes are not linked? (1)

9f.  Finally, if the two genes are not linked according to your results, would you expect that they lie on different chromosomes? Explain your answer. (2)

Healthcare Quality and Safety Management 4

As a nurse leader, you will be expected to communicate effectively with leaders and stakeholders at all levels in an organization in a variety of ways, depending on your purpose and your audience. Being able to deliver effective presentations is one important skill you will likely be called upon to use often.

Discussion Thread: Choosing an Ethical System

Now that you have learned about competing ethical theories, and have gained a better understanding of the biblical foundations for various views on Christian ethics, write a thread that compares and contrasts three different ethical theories presented in your reading, and then argue for which one of the three listed you believe to be the most objectively compelling ethical system. Don't view this as a way to say which one most other people would choose, but rather which one do you believe is true and good. You may choose any metaethical theory covered in Ken Magnuson's Christian Ethics book, except Ethical Relativism, which is not really an metaethical system at all. Seek to answer the following questions for each of the three ethical systems reviewed:

          1. How does the system define “the good" or ethically right?”
          2. How does the system situationally calculate a right ethical decision?
          3. What are a few perceived strengths and weaknesses of the ethical theory?

Once you present the three ethical system, then make your argument in a last paragraph for which one you personally believe is the most compelling. Be sure to carefully define your terms, articulate the strengths and weaknesses of each theory, and defend your position. You are expected to support your position with rational arguments, fitting examples, and expert sources. At least one citation must come from one of your textbooks. Any quotes or information used from sources other than yourself must be cited using footnotes in current Turabian format. Although quotations count towards your word count requirements, you will receive a lower grade if your word count is mostly filled with quotations.

ACEs  or adverse childhood experiences are potentially traumatic things that  occur in a child’s life. These experiences occur before a child is  eighteen, but they remember them throughout their life. ACEs refer to  specific types of trauma children may experience. They  include physical, sexual, and emotional abuse; neglect, losing a parent  such as through divorce, being exposed to domestic violence, having a  parent with a mental illness, having a member of the household who  abuses drugs or alcohol, and having a parent who has been in jail. Children  living through these experiences may suffer from adverse effects for  the rest of their lives. Watch Dr. Nadine Burke Harris's TedTalk

Links to an external site. and answer the following questions:

              1. How did she describe the impact of adverse childhood experiences on health?

              2. What did you find surprising, interesting, or unexpected from the video?

              3. How would you incorporate your new understanding of ACEs in your work with children and families?
