Effectiveness of Alternative and Complementary Medicine

Complementary and alternative medicine is a broad group of resources that often has roots linked to local cultures and established healthcare systems (Casini et al., 2023; Murat-Ringot et al., 2021). However, it is important to understand that although they are often used interchangeably, complementary and alternative medicine have substantial differences (Casini et al., 2023; Murat-Ringot et al., 2021). Complementary medicine is used as a supplement to standard therapy, focusing primarily on symptom relief, improving the therapeutic environment, and optimizing healing capacity (Casini et al., 2023). In contrast, alternative medicine seeks to replace conventional therapy (Casini et al., 2023). According to Murat-Ringot et al. (2021) and Dawczak-Dębicka et al. (2022), replacing standard therapy poses a potentially life-threatening risk to patients. Some of the therapies included in the complementary and alternative medicine category are herbalism, vitamin therapy, prayer, meditation, yoga, acupuncture, tai chi, massage, chiropractic, Reiki, Qi Gong, Ayurvedic medicine, and traditional Chinese medicine (Casini et al., 2023; Murat-Ringot et al., 2021).

A review of the literature reveals diverse criteria regarding the effectiveness of alternative and complementary medicine, with very few techniques presenting solid evidence to justify their application, which has generated intense debate in the scientific community (Casini et al., 2023; Dawczak-Dębicka et al., 2022). According to Casini et al. (2023), alternative and traditional medicine practices have helped relieve symptoms in pediatric cancer patients, reducing the intensity and frequency of nausea, vomiting, weight loss, anxiety, and pain. An extensive systematic review involving more than 24 randomized clinical trials concluded that massage was highly effective in reducing anxiety in children with cancer (Casini et al., 2023). Yoga has demonstrated high safety and efficacy in managing pain in patients undergoing chemotherapy and in reducing blood pressure in hypertensive patients (Casini et al., 2023). A small but promising study showed that small infusions of vitamin C are capable of reducing the adverse reactions of chemotherapy (Dawczak-Dębicka et al., 2022). According to Casini et al. (2023), osteopathic manipulation appears to be useful in improving the motor skills of children with cerebral palsy and moderate to severe spasticity. Although there is evidence supporting the use of alternative and complementary medicine in certain scenarios, the vast majority of therapies have not been adequately tested for safety (Casini et al., 2023; Dawczak-Dębicka et al., 2022). Several herbal products, such as butterbur, have caused severe cases of hepatotoxicity (Casini et al., 2023). Vitamin C infusions are contraindicated in patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency and patients predisposed to kidney stones (Dawczak-Dębicka et al., 2022). Hemp can cause tachycardia, hypotension, anxiety, and cognitive impairment (Dawczak-Dębicka et al., 2022). Despite variable and contradictory evidence, some practices are recognized as effective and solid scientific evidence supports their use, such as acupuncture, yoga, therapeutic massage, mindfulness, and selective phytotherapy; however, these techniques should be complementary, individualized, and never the basis of treatment (Casini et al., 2023; Dawczak-Dębicka et al., 2022).

Allopathic medicine is the conventional or dominant medical system, based on scientific evidence (Gumede et al., 2024). In clinical practice, it is not uncommon to encounter patients whose beliefs incline them toward alternative practices, rejecting conventional therapy, or even worse, using alternative practices without informing their provider. According to Casini et al. (2023), up to 40% of patients do not inform their physician about the use of these practices. For this reason, it is necessary to establish functional communication with the patient and a critical eye that is capable of identifying these scenarios. It is the provider's responsibility to provide all information to the patient, including evidence-based risks and benefits of the conventional and alternative therapies under discussion, so that the patient can make an informed choice (Gumede et al., 2024).

          Introduction

Within the Christian ministry work, it is of extreme importance to implement biblical

elements of leadership in the field to see the ministry succeed, and carry out its purpose. A

primary argument that justifies this need is within community-based sport outreach. The 7

Practices of Effective Ministry offers a model, which can be embraced in order to build a

mission-oriented spirited teambuilding of leadership. On a fellowship of Christian Athletes

(FCA) community-based sports outreach ministry, the following paper provided some details on

the application of the practices 1 through 4 as introduced in the 7 Practices according to the

Ministry Skills Assignment, which include the concepts of recruitment, engagement, support,

          and empowerment.

          1. Recruitment: Called Leaders: The Search

The first is a strong practice of good ministry, which is the recruitment of leaders who are

mature in the Spirit, mission-consistent and has the ability to achieve the vision of the ministry.

In the case of FCA community based sports outreach, recruiting should be prayerful,

discernment based and must be focused on biblical principles. As it is written in Proverbs 27:17,

every person is said to sharpen the other like an iron sharpens another, since it takes true leaders

who will encourage and empower each other in faith and mission.

The process of effective recruitment should begin with finding the right people that share

the same interest and love of the sports as well as the gospel as the FCA does. These executive

pastors ought to have been comprised of people with strong attachment to Christ and in servicing

others. The leaders must be members of the local churches, community organizations, sports

clubs, and even former adherents of ministry, who manifest integrity, humility and they have a

          3

passion to serve people through sports outreach. In addition, culturally responsive recruitment

plan must be embraced so as to achieve diversity in the leadership team. Some studies confirm

the suggestion that a diversified team of leaders can provide an abundance of innovation and

outreach effectiveness especially when it comes to interacting with dissimilar and/or underserved

          communities.

The leaders also should be committed to the following values of FCA: Integrity, Serving,

Teamwork, and Excellence (Hatipoğlu & Akduman, 2025). Unlike a transactional approach,

where leaders are favored on creating a good impression and ability to meet a quota, in this

recruiting strategy, the leaders should be relational in nature, good fit in the community, and

someone who is called to be in the service of this ministry.

          2. Engagement: Developing a Mission-based Culture

After hiring leaders, the other course of action is to involve them in a mission themed and

spiritually cohesive culture. In Proverbs, 29: 18 we learn that, without vision the people will

perish and a clear and attractive mission to be achieved is of the essence. The process of

engagement starts by making sure there is shared vision, expectations, and spiritual practices.

The combination of scripture, testimonies, and real-life stories are essential so that leadership

team can be encouraged to connect with the mission of FCA that is indeed to change

communities via sports and the gospel.

The establishment of a culture of engagement entails the development of strong relations

in the leadership team. This is achievable through having a prayer time, fellowship and spiritual

accountability meetings regularly. In these meetings, the leaders can also provide testimonies of

personal experiences and can read the scripture, which will enable them to grow in faith and

          4

understanding of how sports ministry can be used to the glory of God. Activities such as spiritual

gifts inventory or strengths-based leadership surveys enable leaders to recognize their roles in the

organization, and the way to relate with other people that minimizes conflict and builds trust

          (Brown, 2024).

Building relationships must follow the pattern of Jesus as He did not just teach His

followers, but lived with them, and taught and led them to spiritual growth and a goal (John

15:15). With the help of this model FCA leadership will be able to build the strong team that will

be based on the spiritual development and devoted to the mission of the ministry.

          3. Ministering: Grazing and Preparing to Grow

Leadership also involves support mechanisms that should be provided consistently to

leaders, be it spiritual or emotional. Burnout is a source to ineffective ministry and therefore, it is

wisest to ensure that the leaders obtain the support that would enable them deliver. According to

Galatians 6:2, every believer is called to bear one another much freedom, this is why leaders

should be given periodic spiritual encouragement, pastoral advisory services, as well as prayers.

These caring activities make sure that the leaders are restored spiritually and ready to soldier

          further in their ministry.

Along with spiritual nourishment, practical training and development is important

towards leadership growth. FCA is to provide quarterly leadership development in the area of

trauma-informed coaching, discipleship, event-planning, and gospel-centered leadership. They

also should encourage leaders to take personal reflection, rest, and Sabbath to prevent burnout

and optimal health related to the balance between ministry and personal life (McMahon et al.,

          5

2022). More so, in the case of establishing a stable and strong leadership team, support based on

relationships, such as peer mentoring and team accountability are vital.

By making investment in the spiritual, emotional and practical well-being of its

leadership FCA will be able to make sure that its leadership team will be upright and able to

          guide the ministry successfully.

          4. Ownership and Legacy Empowerment

The last practice is to empower the leaders as it is about turning the leaders over to

authority and job equipping them to answer their calling and letting the leaders lead with

confidence and calling. However, in Matthew 28:18-20, Jesus authorizes His followers to go and

make disciples of all nations, which must be the paradigm of organizational leadership of FCA.

Any kind of leader should be granted the mandate to make decisions, yet in a two-level

leadership structure, central leaders should direct the smaller groups of discipleship leaders,

outreach organizers, and hospitality heads. Such strategy makes clear the roles and duties of

people, as well as opens the way to emergent leaders to rise and mature in terms of leadership

          abilities (Doten-Snitker et al., 2021).

Empowerment also includes giving leaders the voice in planning and making of

decisions. The meetings on strategic planning are supposed to be open and in these planning

gatherings the team members are likely to offer their contribution and work on critical decisions.

Feeling an ownership stake in the ministry causes the leaders to not only increase their

investment in the calling of the ministry but making them more susceptible to delivering on the

passion and purpose of the ministry.

          6

It is also important that one celebrates and recognizes the works of the leaders as part of

empowerment. Ways of saying thank you such as an annual leadership appreciation night and

handwritten thank you notes are a way of boosting the morale and influencing leaders to keep

serving faithfully. Encourage one another, and build up every one of you. ( 1 Thes 5.11 )

Acknowledgement and appreciation do not only empower the team of leaders but helps establish

a culture of gratitude and encouragement.

          Conclusion

When implementing the first four practices of the "7 practices of effective ministry" to

the community-based sports outreach offered by FCA, it should remember about the need to

build a spiritually grounded, mission-aligned and long-term empowered leadership team. With

prayerful recruitment, mission driven involvement, strong support systems and focused

empowerment the ministry will be able to fashion a group of leaders who will be ready to

transform their communities to Christ. This will not only respect the leadership principles

outlined in the bible but will also make the outreach work of FCA sustainable and spiritual.

Application of Practices 5-7 from the 7 Practices of Effective Ministry to Community-

          Based Sports Outreach

          Introduction

In Christian ministry, good leadership is crucial in any outreach program. The

organization of effective ministry with the use of the strategies that are proved to be efficient in

the growth, engagement, and sustainability of the ministry is one of the most powerful products

to make an effective ministry. The 7 Practices of Effective Ministry presents a complete model

of leadership in ministry undertaking. This article is devoted to adopting Practices 5-7 of this

framework, that is: empowering the leadership, providing support, and creating a mission-

oriented culture. In integrating these into a community-based sports outreach ministry (such as

the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), a leadership team can be constructed that, as well as

being successful in the task of reaching people with the gospel, will remain sustainable and

          effective over the longer-term.

          Practice 5: Leader Empowers

Powerful leadership can be regarded as the core element of successful ministry. It would

help the leaders to own their positions in the ministry and a sense of responsibility as well as

commitment to the vision of the ministry. This is the case of empowerment in the FCA

community sports outreach, which entails conferring powers to the leaders in an established

framework. As Jesus explains in Matthew 28:18-20, He gives His disciples the perhaps more

essential authority to teach and lead and this is a model that FCA should use in its own leaders.

Such empowerment involves awarding leaders a chance to make decisions, contributions to the

strategies of ministry and ownership of the respective areas.

          3

A tiered leadership model will facilitate empowerment of the leaders in the FCA

ministry. This method separates the ministry to smaller and manageable teams, which can be

headed by a leader. These people may be discipleship leaders, someone in charge of events, a

person leading outreach or all combined under a central leadership circle. Allowing leaders to

decide on their own further allows leaders to better focus their efforts to suit a particular

community. Empowerment does not only involve the transferring of authority and instead entails

giving the leader equipment, training, and assistance.

The strategic planning meetings should be organized regularly and all the leaders are

expected to express their ideas and participate in the decision-making. Engaging the leaders in

such discussions will make them feel worthwhile and more concerned about achieving ministry

objectives. In addition, applauding the efforts made by the leaders, including annual appreciation

nights, personal thank-you letters, or crowning of their results in public lets them realize their

dedication and ownership in the ministry (1 Thessalonians 5:11).

          Practice 6: Support Providing

Leaders require back-up in order to remain competent and healthy. The challenges of the

leaders of ministries are a variety of burnout, spiritual fatigue, and emotional burning out. The

leaders might not be passionate and zealous towards the ministry without proper care. FCA

needs to develop an efficient support network which will take care of its leaders both spiritually

          and practically.

Priority should be to give spiritual support. The leaders must also be prayed regularly and

allowed to grow spiritually and be encouraged to rest and have time to look at themselves. The

2nd verse in Galatians chapter 6 recognizes the need to rely more upon one another and says that,

          4

as believers, we are expected to bear the burdens of one another and it has a lot of application to

the ministry leaders who have a massive amount of responsibility. Leaders must be allowed to

receive pastoral mentorship, counseling services, and spiritual retreat where they get to recharge

          and reconnect to their calling.

Practical training is required besides spiritual support. Leaders ought to be trained on

what is required to handle events, lead discipleship as well as how to serve society. FCA has the

opportunity to host quarterly leadership training where the needs can be on the relevant topics

like trauma informed coaching, gospel centered leadership, and event planning. In these sessions,

leaders should get theoretical information and practical training so that they are equipped to face

the various challenges which they will come across (Doten-Snitker et al., 2021).

Support of emotions and relationships is essential too. It is recommendable that leaders

are directed to develop supportive association among each other by frequent fellowship, in order

to practice collaborative peer-mentoring as well as team-building. The fact that FCA has created

an environment where the leaders are capable of leaning on one another to seek support,

encouragement and understanding means that the leadership team in FCA never weakens and

          becomes disunities under any condition.

Practice 7: Developing a Mission Driven Culture

The mission oriented culture is the one according to which all actions, decisions and

interactions are based on the overall mission of the ministry. In the case of FCA, it is a mission

that is well understood namely to change communities with the power of sports and the gospel.

The development of culture which puts the mission on the first plan involves the deliberate

          5

attempt at making all leaders, volunteers and participants in the ministry aligned with the vision

and the goals of the ministry.

The initial steps to establishing a mission-oriented culture would be to make all leaders

grasp and accept the mission. This starts at the recruitment stage where prospective leaders are

critically selected according to the similarity of his or her interests with the values and vision of

FCA. A clear and enthusiastic mission is essential as is emphasized in Proverbs 29:18 according

to which without a vision, the people perish (Hatipoğlu, 2025). Leaders have to go through a

complete process of being on boarded, knowing the reason behind their presence, what their

work can add to the entire mission of the ministry.

To ensure this mission focus, it is advisable to instill routine team conferences and

spiritual build up sessions in the facet of leadership. Such activities may involve prayer sessions,

bible studies and reflection sessions whereby the leaders highlight the change their work has

brought and the testimonies of the people on how the ministry has changed their lives. Strong

communication system is also crucial in order to be sure that all team members are well informed

about the progress and challenges of the ministry.

Also, one could employ other instruments like the strengths based leadership tests or

inventory of spiritual gifts to make the leader more informed about their abilities to serve the

ministry by utilizing it accordingly in a manner that is in their strength. This will not only help

build team collaboration but also make sure that the leaders are doing the work where they can

best utilize their skills and personal interest (Brown, 2024).

          Conclusion

          6

Practices 5-7 in the book titled the 7 Practices of Effective Ministry (empowering

leadership, providing support, and fostering a mission oriented culture) are indispensable in the

success of a community-based sports outreach ministry. When the practices are applied, FCA

will be able to develop a team of leaders who are spiritually centered, very active and capable of

leading with purpose and zeal. The more leaders are able to own it (doing what they are
