Use chapter 3 of part II of Lukacs’ Theory of the novel to develop a reading of Pramoedya’s This earth of mankind, Christina Stead’s Letty Fox: her luck, or any other Bildungsroman telling the story of a person’s formation or education toward maturity. How does the “will to education” serve to unify the action of this novel? Is the novel the story of a hero’s apprenticing herself to, and eventually taking her place in, a community through which it’s eventually possible to perform intrinsically meaningful but materially and socially concrete activity? Does her pursuit of that community nonetheless oppose her to conventional social life? How does the author balance, as elements of the protagonist’s struggle, her rejection of the given social world and her orientation toward an actual community?
