Please give a brief description and evaluation of internship activities, progress
Our project focuses on a safety culture survey to help the EHS department develop the survey for all OSU laboratories and workplaces to classify, who is a high-risk group, and to prevent workplace injuries and hazards. In the first four weeks, I was working on how other universities categorize or classify hazards in laboratories and workplaces (e.g., chemical, biological, agricultural, physical, radiation, etc.).
To begin with, I researched five Universities, including UCLA, Stanford University, Cambridge University, Harvard University, and the University of Washington. Since OSU is land and sea-grant, so in the second week I researched oceanographic institutions to find a diving safety program/ ship operation/ ship safety program for OSU. Then, looking back at OSU labs and workplaces, what EHS of OSU has categorized. We also looked at other universities, which are similar to OSU, including Cornell University, Penn State University, the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and Texas A&M University. Furthermore, I categorized hazards from nine universities compared to OSU’s laboratories and workplaces to identify hazards that OSU has or doesn’t have. Then, I subcategorized hazards from each university into one sheet to makes easier comparison.
Moreover, I researched BLS statistics of incidence rates of nonfatal occupational injuries and illnesses involving days away from work in colleges to find what is the most common exposure or event that caused injuries.
