Nicole, a 26 year old female, visited Dr. Collins to have a breast reduction on 4/15/2020. Nicole came to Dr. Collins with a breast size of 32DDD, after the procedure she would like to be a 32D. The procedure went well and she is expected to make a full recovery. Dr. Collins requested she make a 2 week appointment in order for him to check on her healing process. The correct coding for Nicole’s procedure would be 19138-50. The modifier used for Nicole’s procedure would be 50 due to it being bilateral procedure.

Due to minor complications, the surgeon is unable to fully fix the cyst. For The procedure we use the code 23140 for “excision or current age of bone cyst tumor, humerus, with autographing. Since it was completed we add -52 modifier for reduced service to the code and we end up with 2314-52

If something goes wrong with the remodeling of bones and bone density decreases, it weakens the bones and they may break or the bones may become too flexible (Derrickson, 2016). Your body can reverse the loss of bone density through bone remodeling (Derrickson, 2016).

A typical day of meals in my house is Greek yogurt (200mg) for breakfast, a Caesar salad (~540mg), and al pastor tacos (~278mg) for dinner. The calcium content is 1,018mg which is my rough daily intake. As a 31-year-old female, I should be consuming 1,000mg of calcium (NIH). In my al pastor tacos the calcium levels were per ingredient – corn tortillas 46mg each (184mg total for four), pork shoulder 30mg, pineapple 21mg, ancho chilies 10mg, red onion 10mg, cumin 20mg, and chicken stock 3mg. Surprisingly one corn tortilla has the highest calcium count, and chicken stock (also surprising) had the lowest. I generally do meet the recommended daily allowance for calcium in this case.

I would recommend eating tacos with corn tortillas every single day to ensure you’re taking in enough calcium through your daily diet! That’s why I’ve included my favorite taco recipe below!

It is important to get enough vitamin D because it helps your body absorb calcium (Camacho). Good sources of vitamin D include milk, yogurt, cheese, juice, calcium-fortified cereal, and tofu (Camacho).

According to the National Institute of Health, the recommended daily calcium intake for a female, aged 19-50 is 1000 mg (N.d.). I am 37 years old. The food with the highest calcium content is shrimp, and the food with the lowest is water. I wasn’t surprised that the shrimp had the most calcium. However, I was actually surprised that water had any calcium at all. I didn’t think there was calcium in water. Based on my research, I do not meet the recommended daily allowance for calcium. I get more calcium in my diet than I thought I did. I have Crohn’s Disease and all the food products that are high in calcium tear up my stomach, so unfortunately, I don’t get enough calcium in my diet.

Recommendations to ensure someone was getting enough calcium in their diet would include eating balanced meals by looking at the calcium content of foods, and foods high in calcium could be added to increase their intake. It is rare that anyone can get too much calcium from food (National Institute of Health, n.d.). There are drinks that are fortified in calcium, such as orange juice, that can be added if your body can’t handle dairy products. Fortified orange juice contains 349 mg of calcium per serving (National Institute of Health, n.d.). One serving of fortified orange juice contains more calcium than my entire meal example I used for this discussion. Also, people can take calcium supplements. I’ve had to do that before. Personally, I am going to start getting fortified orange juice to increase my intake. I didn’t realize that was a possibility, and it seems like an easy way to increase my calcium intake without having to think about it.

Vitamin D helps absorb calcium in the body. Low levels of vitamin D cause low levels of calcium which is bad for the bones. Vitamin D can be obtained by going outside and getting exposed to UV rays from the sun. There are foods that contain vitamin D, like fish and shellfish, but at very low levels. However, milk fortified with vitamin D is a better option. Vitamin D supplements are also available (Harvard Health Publishing, 2010-2020).
