Module 4

This week’s discussion provides an opportunity for us to get a sense of what it is like for LGBTQ individuals to try to access health services in a system that was not designed for them and, in some situations, is actually designed to keep them out or invisible.

It is appropriate to state your opinions and experience; once stated though, try to move past your own experience to hear and appreciate the experience of others. The more we all can do this, the closer we get to our goal of cultural humility and creating a system of care that is culturally and linguistically appropriate and equal for all.

As with previous discussions, we will approach the discussion questions as a group starting with the first question and working our way through the list of questions. Remember, you are not being asked to post a mini paper responding to the list of questions but rather read what has been posted and then add to the discussion. As each question is answered fully, we will move to the next. One week goes by quickly so you are encouraged to join the discussion as soon as you begin the readings and come back to the discussion area often to follow the postings and add to the discussion. Note: the first question is asking for your opinion.

Part I – Cultural Humility:

1. In your opinion: How would you apply the concept of cultural humility in your personal and/or professional interactions with LGBTQ individuals? Please share examples as you discuss.

Part II – From “outside” to “inside”: This week’s videos and podcast portray some personal LGBTQ stories and the barriers these folks face to accessing culturally appropriate health care. Despite legal gains in some areas like same-sex marriage there are still many aspects to our healthcare system that feel much more exclusive than inclusive, resulting for many in a feeling of living “outside” the healthcare system. Drawing on the stories and experiences presented in this week and the information presented on the Healthy People 2020 website, please discuss the following questions, one at a time, with classmates and your instructor.

2. What do you see as the most significant barriers to culturally appropriate health care for LGBTQ individuals and families? Please apply your assigned readings and videos to support your responses.

3. It is often said that transgender members of our society are the most vulnerable of the LGBTQ group when it comes to health care and social inclusion. To what extent do you agree, and why? What causes them to feel like they are constantly on the “outside” of today’s healthcare system?

4. After reviewing the TED Talk by Yaruba Richen and the Healthcare Equality Index, what stands out to you as the most improved area(s) of care for LGBTQ persons? The biggest gap(s)? Support your discussion with data from the HEI report.

5. What is one thing you can do starting today in your workplace or community to create a more culturally appropriate and inclusive experience for LGBTQ individuals and their families? As you discuss your recommendations, consider health needs and health outcomes and how this action might reduce the barriers to equality in health care.

  • Apply culturally appropriate terms when referring to groups within the LGBTQ population. (CO4)
  • Describe health concerns of the LGBTQ population with emphasis on transgender health. (CO2)
  • Examine the role of cultural disparities as they relate to overall (or general?) health, health needs, and health outcomes for the LGBTQ population. (CO5)
