Students will have the entire term to complete this activity. To begin the assignment, students should read pages 3-10 from Volume 2 of The Norton Anthology of African American Literature. Then, students should find one example representative of the vernacular tradition not found in the textbook. This example can include printed lyrics of a hymn, rap song, sermon, blues song, etc., an audio clip or video clip. Afterward, students will prepare and post to Brightspace a typed 2 to 3-page double-spaced narrative in which they identify and discuss the following: (1) a brief biographical overview of the author or source of origin, (2) a brief overview of the selected text, identifying the subject matter, structure, etc., and (3) an analysis of the text, including an explanation of how the selected text relates to the African American Vernacular Tradition. The assignment should also include a link to the audio or visual clip or printed lyrics. Additional assignment instructions will be posted online. This assignment will be worth 100 points and will be due by the last week of classes.
